Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight's hit drama SAS Rogue Heroes will soon be back on our screens – and now BBC One has released a handful of dramatic first-look images.

The second instalment of the show, which revolves around a special commando unit that operated behind enemies during World War II, will pick up in spring 1943, with the action shifting from Cairo to mainland Europe, as Paddy Mayne (Jack O'Connell) takes control of the SAS following David Stirling’s capture (below).

Other returning characters include Connor Swindells (Stirling), Sofia Boutella (Eve Mansour) and Dominic West (Dudley Clarke), while new additions to the cast include Con O'Neill (Happy Valley) as British Commander General Montgomery, and Mark Rowley (The Last Kingdom) and Jack Barton (Heartstopper) as new SAS recruits Jock McDiarmid and John Tonkin.

A release date for season 2 is yet to be confirmed, but the BBC promises that it is coming "soon".

It was confirmed upon the BBC One airing of the first season finale that SAS Rogue Heroes will be back, with a "To Be Continued" card added on to the end of the episode.

The show's creator Steven Knight said of the recommission: "After the roaring success of Rogue Heroes I’m delighted to be embarking on the next chapter of the story. Series two will take the SAS into mainland Europe and will take our heroes to the limits of their endurance."

Meanwhile, Lindsay Salt, director of BBC Drama, said: "The fantastic response and huge iPlayer figures for SAS Rogue Heroes is a testament to Steven Knight’s incredible skill for turning our history into modern, must-see TV.

Connor Swindells and Jack O'Connell will be back as David Stirling and Paddy Mayne, as well as Dominic West as Dudley.

One character that won't be returning will be Alfie Allen after his character, Jock, died in season 1.

Alongside the returning characters, there are a host of new faces joining the cast in season 2, including David's brother Lieutenant Bill Stirling, the founder of the 2SAS regiment, who will be portrayed by Gwilym Lee (The Great).

What will SAS Rogue Heroes season 2 be about?

The show's second season will take place in mainland Europe and "will take our heroes to the limits of their endurance," the BBC previously teased.

The official synopsis for the new season reads: "Spring, 1943. With David Stirling captured and Paddy Mayne now in charge of the SAS, their attention must turn from the conflict in North Africa to mainland Europe.

"But GHQ have cast doubt over the future of the regiment, while the creation of a new unit and a surprise arrival makes things even more difficult for the men.

"Can they prove that the SAS remains essential to the war, wherever it may lead them?"
